The Glass Bakery - Hanging and Perched Glass Birds

$54.00

Based in Mill Cove, Nova Scotia, The Glass Bakery creates kiln-fired bird ornaments out of glass. The glass ornaments and décor are inspired by the owner, Cara's, passion and excitement for wildlife and nature.

Cara has a Ph.D. in meteorology and climatology, and she was following that route for a while, but then I wanted a change in career. Basically, she wanted to stay at home with her elderly dog (a Belgian shepherd named Hudson) because he needed her. So, she was inspired to start a home business because of him.

She decided to start playing around with glass, making anything she could. She was making dishes, posters, pictures, and jewelry. She did shows and farmers’ markets and that kind of thing for about five years, and then Hudson died. If you’re a dog person, that’s pretty earth shattering. It changed everything. She started trying to reconnect with nature. Ultimately, it led her to watch birds in the garden where she lives. She then had this idea that she would start to make glass birds.

So, she always says that her dog, Hudson, inspired her to create these little glass birds and was the inspiration for her starting a business.

Every piece is made from scratch in her Nova Scotia studio. The birds are drawn, cut, and shaped by hand. Finely powdered coloured glass is layered between clear glass, and the whole bundle is kiln-fired to fuse the pieces together.

No paints, glazes, or molds are used - ever.

Bringing joy to nature lovers across all generations, these whimsical glass birds capture a sense of innocence and playfulness, evoking memories of a special place, moments or loved-ones.
