Have you ever wondered how some products come to life? How one painting or sketch turns into textiles, and how it can be done in an ethically and socially-responsible way? Ellie shares the process behind East End Press, which began with an idea in her head and is now an evolved international team reaching customers all over the world.
As an artist, Ellie had many designs in her portfolio, but she wanted to expand her offerings beyond what she could do herself on paper, and needed print-makers to transform her designs into high-quality tactile products. She traveled to India, and after a few tuk-tuk rides and chats with the locals, she met Amal and Nikhil. Their relationship blossomed, and soon, with new connections in the Indian fair-trade textile industry, her dream products came to life.
How it works: Once Ellie creates her designs, they are then shipped off to Jaipur. There, a team mixes and matches colours and uses large silkscreens to create prints with several colour layers. All products are made with 100% recycled content from pulped down cotton waste that is collected from India’s textile industry. For her stationery products, once the paper shapes are cut, they are sent to the stitching unit (a mostly-female team that receives equal pay to their male colleagues!). Finally, every single item is packaged by hand.
So much thought, care, and time goes into any small-produced item. Thanks to Ellie for sharing the love and process behind hers. These are one person's dreams we hold in our hands. How special is that.
Now in the shop: Handmade fabric pouches, cat and dog mask greeting cards, hummingbird, peony and salmon greeting cards, and blue bird and Easter egg wooden ornaments.
Briefly tell us about yourself and the heart behind what you do
Briefly tell us about yourself.
Hi everyone! My name is Ailish Sullivan. I grew up in Cape Breton and am currently a student at Mount Saint Vincent University. I am a huge lover of the outdoors and enjoy exploring new places. I am happy to be back in Cape Breton for the summer as nothing compares to the scenery!
What led you to put this book together?
When me and my siblings were small, we always wanted to journal about our adventures. My parents would create homemade books for us, but we always wished something like this existed.
What inspires you to hit the ground running each morning?
I have a very tight knit family, so knowing I have a strong support system keeps me motivated to get out and try new things.
Which Cape Breton beach is your favourite?
Florence beach is my favourite local beach, and West Mabou beach is great for a day trip!
"Since we love the beaches in Cape Breton so much ourselves, me and my mother thought it would be great to create this book. We hope it inspires other locals to get out and explore what’s in their backyard."
Everyone give Ailish a warm LQ welcome! You can check out the book she made with her mother both in the stop and online.
]]>There’s a face and a heart behind every business name. Today we’re introducing you to Farrah of Canapa Candle, a small-batch candle company based in beautiful Louisbourg, N.S. Enjoy!
Who is Canapa Candle?
Hi! I’m Farrah Aspinall-Renaud, the owner and candle maker at Canapa Candle, based in the beautiful fishing village of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. We are a small batch candle company, where all of our fragrances are hand mixed to create uniquely scented soy candles and wax melts. We work with high quality, clean burning, plant based ingredients.
What lead you to candle-making?
I prefer to avoid products with added chemicals, like paraffin candles. In the summer of 2021, I decided to create a candle that was made naturally with botanical ingredients. I spent months testing waxes, wicks and jars, there was lots of trial and error. Finally I developed a formula that was perfect and we launched that year in December.
What inspires you to hit the ground running each morning?
Being an entrepreneur in Canada can be tough, but also very rewarding. Naturally I am inspired by other business owners. I love surrounding myself with folks who hustle, are innovative, and constantly strive to grow in the world of entrepreneurship.
What does your creative process look like?
We hand mix all of our fragrances to create wonderfully scented candles. My goal is to create a candle that is unique to our brand, something you won't recognize anywhere else. The process begins by mapping out different scent notes and understanding what can pair well together. From there I'll hand mix several fragrances together and then move to testing them in a candle.
What does running your own business mean to you?
Being a business owner is a journey. You are constantly learning, expanding ideas and encouraging others in their own space as well. Recently I left my career at a Canadian commerce company called Shopify to operate my business full time. So far this year I have gained three new stockists and moved into my own studio space.
What’s something about your business that most people wouldn’t know?
I worked a full time job while operating Canapa Candle out of my kitchen. I started making candles with the double boiler method on my kitchen stove before moving to a wax warmer system, which I would setup on my counter and I'd pour my candles on my kitchen table. I did this for a year before finally moving into my own studio space in Lousibourg.
When you’re not working, what is your favourite thing to be doing?
When I am not making candles, I am taking care of my newborn baby, Marina. She is such a joy and my future little helper in the candle studio. I am a big fan of self care days, visiting with family and exploring our beautiful Cape Breton Island.
Thanks, Farrah! Find her beautiful soy candles and melts in-store and online now.
]]>If the idea of settling in for the night with a good book and a drink or treat sounds like heaven, then Iceland’s Christmas Eve Jólabókaflóðið (roughly, “flood of books”) tradition is for you.
Iceland has always been a country of booklovers, and while the rate of book buying has settled a little from years past, jólabókaflóðið, or jolabokaflod, remains a popular tradition.
The history of this December tradition – which sees publishers release a flood of new books in the lead-up to Christmas – goes back to World War II, when restrictions on imports to Iceland limited gift-giving options, and Icelanders turned to the local book market.
In 1944, the Icelandic book trade started sending a book catalogue to every household in November. Christmas Eve, which is when presents are opened, became a night when many folk settle in to read their gifts, often with a cup of hot chocolate. Or just chocolate.
Sound like a new Christmas Eve tradition? (Us, too!) From now until Christmas Eve, give the gift of a book and receive one of our chocolate bars, for free. Mention this promotion in-store to redeem. Or, redeem online by adding both the book and chocolate to your cart and enter code JOLAABOKAFLOD.
Feet up, spines cracked. Merry Christmas Eve!

Lisa started out on her venture by starting her very own brand back in October 2017. She currently lives in North Sydney, and fortunately, you can now find her items here at LQ. If you ever see any of her items that you'd like resized or customized, Lisa is your gal!
Simply put, Lisa finds that jewellery can help uplift your mood, signify special occasions as gifts, and enhance your attire and personal collection, and we couldn't agree more.
Some other facts Lisa wanted to share with her new clientele: she has had the privilege of gifting her items to Hollywood celebrities at the Los Angeles DPA's Gifting Suite, in honour of the Oscars, Emmys, and the Golden Globes. Her jewellery has also been featured in UK Vogue, UK Vanity Fair, British Elle, Wedding Bells Canada, and Tatler Magazines!
Warm welcome, LYL!

I am married to my high school sweetheart and I am a soon to be mama. You may recognize me, as I am the shop's manager. My hope is to someday actually have my very own business. My current hobby is journaling and taking out my camera to capture beautiful things.
One of my favourite quotes is by Mother Teresa that reads, "There is more hunger in this world for love and appreciation than for bread." We often forget to just love and take care of those around us, and it often doesn't take much. I hope to be the kind of person that reflects this and meets this need in the ways that I can.
What's playing on Spotify when you're working?
Anything vintage and soft.
Guilty pleasure?
Cozying up with a blanket to watch a movie.
What's your favourite item in the shop right now?
I love our plant and floral section, they add so much life to the shop!
]]>Hello! My name is Molly, and I’m the owner of Lucy Lux Candle Company! I am a candle maker based in Sydney, Nova Scotia. I hand pour soy wax products from candles to melts, but what my brand is best known for is my paint can candles. My candles are meant to be a form of self-care, as well as decor in your space. I specifically choose feel-good, yummy and comfy scents for my candles, so when they are lit you are instantly transported away from all your troubles! (If only 😉)
I started candle making in May of 2021, after leaving my job as a makeup artist & retail manager. I wanted to create a new path for myself that was relaxing, made me feel good, and gave me an outlet for my creative side.
The name “Lucy” in Lucy Lux comes from my dog, who sadly passed away in January of 2021. I love having her attached to what I do every day, and having her memory with me in every phase of this business journey.
If you’re thinking “hey, I recognize this lady!” You might have seen me around The Middle Ground Market working, being silly, and helping other small business owners grow! I’m so excited to have my products at La Quaintrelle! Truly the loveliest shop with the loveliest team.
Welcome to the shop Lucy Lux Candle Co!
Hello, I'm Abby!

What's playing on Spotify when you're working?
I am always listening to anything Taylor Swift!
Guilty pleasure?
I have two! One is not being able to start my day without a cup of tea, and the second is playing my favourite songs on repeat without getting tired of them.
What's your favourite item in the shop right now?
My favourite item right now is the Kathmandu Tasseled Throw because it is perfect for summer, whether it be for picnics at the beach or keeping warm at the campfire. Plus, the colour pattern is amazing!

It's our pleasure to introduce to you a new addition to our store-front, beautiful upcycled candles with a purpose, otherwise known as The Circular Season. Proudly produced by Krista Montelpare, you may know her as the owner of Cellary Vintage - Nostalgic mid-century serving ware and décor.
The Circular Season is a collection of soy wax candles made from upcycled vintage and heritage vessels. They are made with dried florals, so even though they are made without added fragrance, as the wax heats up, the dried florals release a gentle botanic aroma.
Krista moved to Glace Bay in 2019 and fell in love with life by the sea. She is passionate about sustainability and believes the circular economy is a crucial component to mindful consumerism. She has been upcycling candles for around 10 years to give to friends but has recently observed a notable shift in the appreciation for mid-century classic and vintage aesthetics. Krista decided to embrace the enthusiasm and release additional re-purposed, upcycled candles for others to enjoy, and we believe you will enjoy them too!
"Many of us are familiar with those oft-forgotten items like mid-century glassware, earthenware crocks, and stunning silver pieces left languishing on a shelf, despite their aesthetic appeal. The Circular Season candles breathe new life and purpose into mismatched and under-appreciated vessels and containers to be enjoyed once again"
- Krista Montelpare

Whether it be a tub, a sink or a basin, let your new, beautiful Turkish towel soak in cold water for up 12 hours. Once it’s done soaking, throw it in the wash on cold, and hang it somewhere to air dry - consider a banister, door knob or towel rod. In doing so, you’re allowing the Turkish cotton strands to expand, allowing your towel to become incredibly soft and absorbent.
Ten years ago, I took a little bit of my savings and bought a domain and a box full of dresses. I taught myself how to build a website, and me, my mom, and grandmother spent an afternoon steaming clothes. I told family and friends that I had some things for sale, and thankfully, they were loved! I still remember every dress in that first box and can’t part with the very first one I owned.
Soon you wanted to try them on, so I rented a small room on the second floor of 299 Commercial St. I was the only occupant in the building and opened only on Saturdays for a few hours when I wasn’t working my full-time job. My dad made two racks, my mom sewed some purses, and my counter was my grandmother’s buffet (but some things never change… our cash register is still my great-grandmother’s antique suitcase). The world of small business was entirely new, but I was hooked. I researched brands, made contacts, hired staff, and slowly, LQ began to grow.
A look back over the years brings back so many memories… sip and shops, customer and maker profiles, many workshops, our 12 Days of Christmas giveaways, being named one of the best places to shop online in Canada by Buzzfeed, sending our first order across the world, being recognized by the Chamber as Young Entrepreneur of the Year, establishing the La Quaintrelle Women in Business Scholarship at Memorial High School, working with community partners on special events, our Wishing Well Campaign, many
fundraisers, and so much more.
The best part of it all has been you. We’ve met so many fabulous people along the way – neighbours, reps, fellow entrepreneurs and business owners, and of course, our customers, vendors, staff, and friends. I have so much appreciation for everyone that has walked through the doors, made an online purchase, worked in the shop, or offered their time, energy or expertise to the business. You are all a part of the success and growth of La Quaintrelle. Thank you for being part of our community and helping us to learn and grow. It’s been an absolute joy and dream to build this little shop with you.
To thank you, we’re having a birthday celebration this
Saturday, December 4, both in-store and online. Watch for details.
We can’t wait to see what’s next! 😊
Hi! My name is Annie Grace.
I was born in Ontario, but moved here to Cape Breton when I was just a little girl. Cape Breton island will always be my home, and I will always be a Caper at heart!
I graduated high school in 2018, and last year, embarked on the biggest adventure of my life all the way to Australia and Papua New Guinea for six months. There I did some mission work and grew in my faith. I am deeply spiritual and have found so much life and joy in someone that is much greater than I am.
Since being home I have had the privilege of working here at La Quaintrelle, this unique and lovely little treasure of a place has brought me so much joy! I have a love for little quirky and unique items - whatever that may be! I enjoy seeing customers come in and fall in love with something that makes their day a little brighter.
A little more about me...
I am currently obsessed with Friends!
My guilty pleasure would have to be Netflix days, curled up with some tea.
It's hard to pick just one thing! This quote by C.S Lewis is one I love.
“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”
This quote has brought me so much comfort as I journey through life. Often I've found myself wondering what God is up. Have you ever felt you didn’t quite turn out the way you’d hoped or wondered where you're going in life? Let me tell you, there is purpose, beauty and meaning in whatever we walk through and in whatever place we may find ourselves in. God has plans and purpose for your life, and sometimes they are much bigger than what you may have chosen for yourself. Trust His process and embrace the unknown.
If I could spend 24 hours with anyone it would have to be an older brother you could say, though we are not related biologically. I was adopted when I was younger, and the man who adopted me had a son (about 10 or so years older than me) that passed away before I was ever a part of the picture. I never got the chance to meet him. I’ve always reminded my dad of him and he always tells me I would have loved Jeffrey. I’ve heard he is a lot like my dad. I would love to have a day to get to know him and go sailing with our dad together.
I have been really inspired by the clothing style in Friends and have tried to incorporate that into my own personal style. I also really love earthy tones and I absolutely love all things cozy, so I find much comfort in sweaters and cardigans.
There are so many things! I would have to say I would definitely use that money to help with the poverty rates here in Cape Breton, as well as our mental health facilities and overall health care.
Some of my favorite items here in the shop would have to be the Covered By Hope items. The proceeds go to such a wonderful cause. All the items are made at the Hope House, which is Cape Breton's first live in recovery home for women. I love the Kindred Clothing, a Canadian made ethical clothing line. I also love some of the cute items like earrings and socks from Mimi & August.
Where do I even start? I could say so much. I would start by saying there is so much ahead that she cannot see yet, and many times it will feel that way, but life is always moving forward and before she knows it the leaves will have changed and things won’t quite look the same. I would tell her that it's so important to not put so much focus on the destination, it's actually the journey that matters most and finding life and love in the midst of the messy. It's those in between stages and times of most confusion that bring forth the most surprises, light and life. Embracing these times are essential. These are the moments you remember more and even cherish more than actually getting to where you wanted to be, and sometimes you won't even end up where you thought you’d always be. So life definitely hasn’t gone the way I thought it would at that age, but I wouldn’t trade the way it has gone for anything.
My personal motto or mantra would be to do the next right thing and be mindful of that moment by moment, whatever that may be in any given situation. I desire to have a pure heart and do the right thing, which can often be a struggle, though this has encouraged me in many ways to either make a step I need to take for myself even if it's uncomfortable, or for someone else.

A few years ago, we wanted to create an initiative that would benefit not only our community, but our customers and environment as well. What eventually transpired was the idea of the Wishing Well Campaign, where customers bring their pre-loved LQ items back to us, and in exchange, receive a discount on a future LQ purchase. In turn, we donate the items to a local initiative or organization in need. In its own small yet tangible way, it is a service that has allowed us to give back to our immediate community members in need and has supported some of our sustainability goals as a business.
In summer 2019, your donations supported the Five Eleven Youth Centre here in North Sydney.
Founded in mid-2018, Five Eleven Youth Centre is a not-for-profit, youth drop-in centre providing a safe space for children, youth and their families to play, grow, relax and inspire one another. The Centre offers art classes, yoga, movie nights, workshops aiming to foster creativity, benefit dances, and more. In addition, the centre has a “Sunshine Room” which houses their Community Caring Closet. In the closet you’ll find clothing for children and adults, shoes, accessories and hygiene products, all of which are provided free of charge to those in need.
Five Eleven graciously accepted your pre-loved items and assured us that the clothing would be going into the hands of individuals in the community who need it most!
Our Wishing Well Campaign is ongoing and we happily accept donations at any time. Should you wish to rehome your LQ items, please consider us! Our donation criteria is outlined below.
Thank you to everyone who has donated in the past, and we look forward to seeing you again in-store!

Jennifer currently services the entirety of Cape Breton Island and Antigonish area, and this coming winter she will bring her experience and skills to the Maison de Naissance Birth Centre in Torbeck, Haiti, training local volunteers to support labouring mothers.
“Every mother deserves a positive, safe and healthy birth experience where she feels supported and protected,” says Jennifer. “Yet women throughout the third world are often unable to access services that we in the Western world are lucky to have.”
Jennifer hopes to be a part of this change, and to start she’ll make her mark in Haiti, a nation that has the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere.
The role of the doula is not yet known in Haiti, but it is something Jennifer hopes can be fostered.
“Presently, while family members are encouraged to attend and assist the delivering mother, many families are not able to provide this support for various reasons,” explains Jennifer. “As a result, many women have only a midwife with them in the delivery room.”
As part of her fundraising efforts, Jennifer has been making and selling beeswax food wraps, and we are happy to be selling them here at LQ to assist her fundraising efforts. Monies raised will help Jennifer with her daily living expenses while in Haiti, plus travel, vaccines, and lodging. Any funds raised beyond what she needs will be used to purchase equipment and supplies or given as donations to the centre.
A selection of Jennifer’s wraps can be found at LQ both in-store and online.
To make a donation to her fundraiser, visit her GoFundMe page.
Best of luck, Jennifer!
]]>We spoke to Kyle to learn more about his business, his creative process and his inspiration behind his creations. Here is what he had to tell us:
How did you get into creating?
Phee’s Original Goods grew out of a hobby that began around 2010. I saw some work John Roberts of Leatherworks had done and that led me to buying some tools and leather of my own. I made some wallets and belts and familiarized myself with the tools but didn’t get too serious with it.
A few years later I took on some work building skate parks that led me around the country in the sunny months and laid off on the winters. I took up the leather work again to stay busy over the winter. In 2016 I injured my foot skateboarding and happened to hobble into Clo’s General Leather Goods in Edmonton. He was looking for help at the time and I was available. Through working with him I saw what it took to run a business in this industry and worked over the next few years to slowly build Phee’s Original Goods into a full time gig.
In 2018 I took up a studio in the Customs House Artisan Incubator in Port Hawkesbury and have been working full time there producing a line of standard issue goods as well as some wholesale and commissioned work.
What does your creative process look like?
My creative process is always changing but it usually follows a similar pattern. Most designs in our lineup start as custom commissions. After making a few iterations of the product we refine it to something we’re stoked on we’ll add it to the lineup. The actual making of the goods is all very manual and hands on. Everything is hand cut, hardware is set by hand, most stitching is done by hand and we use a vintage singer to help out as well.
How long does it take to create a piece from start to finish?
Our work is super labour intensive, on some of our bigger pieces like our duffel bags, we can spend a few days making them. As for our smaller items we try to create them in small batches, around ten at a time which can take a day or two depending on the design and the day.
Where do you get inspiration for your items? What is your favourite item to create?
I’m always scouring the internet for different designs, styles, and looks to take inspiration from. Same goes for my day to day life, I’ve developed a bit of a hawk eye for nice accessories. Lately I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the raw denim, traditional tattoo, and vintage thrift communities for looks to take inspiration from and I’m a dyed in the wool skateboarder so all of those threads tend to compliment each other.
My favourite things to make are new designs that I haven’t tackled yet. Sometimes it’s bigger more technical designs, sometimes simpler but it’s always what’s new that’s stoking me out.
Where is your favourite place to create?
My favourite place to make stuff is anywhere in Cape Breton. There’s such a good community of like-minded folks making cool things and lately there seems to be a rejuvenated excitement for creative endeavours on the island.
What does your business mean to you?
Running a business to me means a full commitment of time, effort, and creativity. You can see that commitment reflected in other local small business owners who’re all working towards a similar goal of bolstering the island’s economy and creating a community where we want to live.
We are thrilled to carry several products from Phee’s Original Goods, both in-store + online. Shop our selection of wallets, coasters, dog collars and more here.
Thanks so much to Kyle for giving us a behind the scenes look at his creative process!
]]>Photography has been a passion of Brenna’s for almost 20 years and it plays a huge role in her design work and personal life. When she isn’t creating, she can be found listening to live music, hiking, walking along the coasts of local beaches, travelling, discovering new restaurants, partaking in pilates and yoga, cooking and taking road trips with her family.
We reached out to Brenna to learn more about her and her creative process. Here is what she had to say!
How did you get into making cards & stationery?
My grandmother gave me a camera when I was 11 years old. That was the beginning of my love for photography.I made my first cards almost 20 years ago by gluing scenic Cape Breton photos to blank cards and selling them in local gift shops in Inverness. Once I became a graphic designer, this process changed and now I have scenic Cape Breton cards as well as playful greeting cards.
What does your creative process look like?
It looks like a lot of notes and designs on loose paper and in notebooks. It also looks like Pinterest boards and folders filled with colour inspiration. I find I have more creative bursts in the fall and early spring, but I’m always keeping notes on paper and my phone with ideas for new products, designs and especially for greeting cards. That’s the beginning of the process. When I get into artwork/mockup phase I put on headphones and start designing from my sketches and notes. I’ll often have ideas that connect as I’m designing and will add those to the mix. I have numerous folders on my computer of ideas and inspiration. Once I’m ready to finalize artwork I review my designs, choose the ones that work the best and go into production mode. It is quite a process once my designs are ready to send to print – deciding on quantity, other pieces I may need to order (envelopes, stickers, mattes, protective envelopes, tags) as well as sizes, product and colours for apparel (that takes forever). I love receiving my final designs from the printer. I inspect all designs, photograph them for social and my website/Etsy and then put the pieces together. I wish I had more time in the day to do this part as well as to execute on my lengthy list of “someday” projects.
Where do you get inspiration for your items? What is your favourite piece to create?
Inspiration comes from everyday experiences, things people say, the people I meet and am around, travelling near and far and the coastal beauty of my two homes in Halifax and western Cape Breton. I find inspiration comes from being present in the daily moments of life and giving my brain time to rest by going for walks on the beach and around the neighbourhood near Dalhousie, listening to music and going to see live music, watching movies in theatre, reading magazines and hanging out with my friends and family. I have a lot of awesome kids in my life, including my daughter, that are so fun to be around. To be creative, it’s important to have a childlike curiosity about the world – my daughter, nephews, nieces and younger friends certainly remind me of this.
My favourite piece to create are greeting cards. They can be quick and fun and a bit quirky. I enjoy connecting copy with photography and illustrations. It’s especially satisfying when my awesome customers comment on the designs or tell my why they are sending the card to someone. Cards are meaningful and can truly uplift someone or remind them they are loved or appreciated.
Where is your favourite place to create?
I love going to a quiet location with a giant piece of paper to organize my ideas or brainstorm. I LOVE the brainstorming process and reviewing sketches and ideas. When I’m in a brainstorming phase, the ideas flow pretty quickly – it’s very exciting. The real work comes when I’m designing the pieces and choosing fonts, colours and the appropriate photo or artwork.
What does your business mean to you?
It means connection to people and place. It’s a creative outlet that constantly inspires me. Through my business, I’ve self-published twentythree - a whimsical book of Q&A with photography, participated in two Lumiere art projects and studied screen printing at NSCAD. But designing Cape Breton inspired apparel, artwork and greeting cards is truly special. I started doing this in 2012 because I thought other people must love Cape Breton as much as I do. My business constantly reminds me of the amazingly special community I grew up in where the connections run deep and the memories continue through the generations.
What is your favourite quote or life motto?
My favourite quote: “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” - George Bernard Shaw. My life philosophy is 85% kindness, optimism and a sense of humour, 10% laissez-faire attitude and 5% don’t take crap from people.
We are so excited to carry some of missbrenna’s products here at LQ. Currently, we carry Cape Breton stickers + bottle openers, various Cape Breton Island scenic greeting cards, as well as other greeting + occasion cards. You can shop missbrenna here.
Thank you for a behind the scenes peek at your life and creative process, Brenna!
]]>From dainty hair clips to entire dish sets, Jessie creates a wide variety of exclusive, one-of-a-kind products.
We reached out to Jessie to learn more about her creative process and what inspires her. Here's what she had to say:
What inspired you get into pottery making?
When I was about 15, a good friend of my family opened a teaching pottery studio, my step mom and I started taking evening classes together, and I was very quickly obsessed. I never enjoyed the art classes offered at my highschool, so this gave me an alternate option to create with very little rules.
After high school, I sought out community centers wherever I was living to take classes from, until I was lucky enough to meet a retiring potter looking to get rid of all their equipment and a lot of raw materials.
What does your creative process look like?
I really know what I like and I try to recreate it everytime. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with ideas that seem perfect, until I try to make them and see how they need changing. Always trial and error. Learning from mistakes.
How long does it take to make a piece from start to finish?
The shortest about of time I could make something start to finish is about 5 days, if all circumstances are perfect. But generally most things take a few days longer.
What pieces other than mugs do you create? What is your favourite piece to create?
I currently make planters, mugs, tumblers, vases, serving dishes, lidded vessels, but my favourite things to make are dish sets. I only do then by custom order, but it makes sure that the customer gets exactly what they want and when you can see the whole set together, it’s a beautiful thing!
What is the inspiration behind your designs?
I am very interested in how you can use the clay to its greatest potential, with little waste (in the form of trimming). I think the cylinder is the greatest test of a potter, getting the walls to be even and thin, without compromising its strength.
Where is your favourite place to work and why?
Pottery is pretty stationary, luckily I love my studio because I can't work anywhere else!
What does your business mean to you?
Freedom and control. It’s incredibly hard sometimes, and I wish I had extra hands and skills, but learning how to seek out people who have the skills you don’t and ask for help has been very beneficial. Connecting with a like minded community has been my favourite part!
We are delighted to carry several of Jessie’s creations at LQ, both in-store and online. You can shop her collection of mugs here.
Thank you, Jessie for a sneak peek into your life and the story behind your products!
]]>Now usually, I’m a sucker for neutrals - beige, olive, black, brown, possibly dusty pink - you name a neutral, I love it. Maybe because they’re simple to match and compliment my colouring, but something about this piece spoke to me. It is the sweetest, most perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.
Speaking of neutrals, my next store favourite is an item I’ve had my eye on for a long while - I have just been waiting for it to be restocked in my size - The Ophelia Jumpsuit! Not only is this one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen, it’s remarkable how many customers comment on its uniqueness and charm.
Come to think of it - both The Prettiest Pink Top and The Ophelia Jumpsuit have ruffled sleeves - maybe I have a thing for ruffles?
Next on my list are any of our products from Rifle Paper Company. Having followed many lifestyle bloggers, vloggers and influencers for many years, I’ve been familiar with Rifle Paper for quite some time. I have always appreciated the feminine charm associated with the brand. If I had to choose, I would say my favourite item from Rifle Paper Co. we carry is the Tapestry Canteen. Something about the delicate, intricate floral pattern is so appealing!
Lastly, is the neutral Home of Our Hearts print. I bought this item in-store back in November, and proudly displayed it in my apartment while living in Fredericton. Not only is it one of my favourite items in store, it is one of my favourite items that I own!
Stay tuned as I’m sure I will have more favourites as our new inventory keeps arriving! ♡

Have you heard of Hope Project? Established by local physician Dr. Laura Whyte, her husband Andrew, and their friends Chelsea and Ethan Fenton, Hope Project is a therapeutic live-in recovery home located in Cape Breton for women suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.
Their mission is to empower a new generation of women in Cape Breton to experience freedom from their addiction, to restore a sense of dignity and self-worth, and to integrate their healing back into our community.
Their vision is a holistic one. Hope Project utilizes and connects residents with existing supports within the community, but they go one step further and employ unique skills-development programming to help them maintain supportive relationships in their lives and become healthy and productive citizens of our community. Currently this programming includes individual life coaching, art and culture experiences, physical activity, equestrian and horticulture therapy, and community volunteerism.
This programming has resulted in a small on-site farm, and just recently, the establishment of the social enterprise, Covered By Hope.
Covered By Hope was spearheaded by recovered women of the program as a means to support Hope Farm and the home's current residents. Soap and candles are made by hand with the farm's goat milk, and each product is accompanied by an insert card with a quote that has inspired the woman's journey. All product ingredients are naturally-sourced and Cape Breton/Canadian made.
We are honoured to be retailing these products on behalf of Covered By Hope and to support these women in restoring health, a sense of well-being, and hope for their lives.
Soaps and candles are available in-store and online. Read more about Hope Project and how you can help, here.
]]>Hi! My name is Kiana, and I was born and raised here on beautiful Cape Breton Island. I grew up in Millville, but moved to George’s River when I was a young girl. I’m currently a student - having obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in May 2017 from Cape Breton University, and will be graduating with my Bachelor of Social Work from St. Thomas University this coming December.
I spent the last year living off-island and while it is beautiful in New Brunswick, I truthfully couldn’t wait to get back home to enjoy the picturesque beauty (and delicious food) that the island has to offer. I’m excited to start as Sales and Creative Associate this summer at La Quaintrelle as it has always been one of my favourite stores on the island (and a bonus that it is near my hometown!) The unique, charming inventory has always spoken to me and I am genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to educate myself on the stories behind each of the items in store to fully appreciate them all.
I am also looking forward to the creative aspect of the position as I am a very creative individual. I am excited to write about our new arrivals, and share our items and their stories with all of you!
A little bit about me...
What are you currently obsessed with?
Right now, I am obsessed with The Office! I know I am VERY late to the game, and I truly wish I would have started it much earlier! I’m currently about halfway through the series so if you see me in the store, no spoilers please!
What's your guilty pleasure?
I have a few guilty pleasures.. but the two most significant are: Trailer Park Boys – if you say you don’t find this show hysterical, you’re lying – and pizza. Garlic fingers, please!
What is the best thing you've ever read, watched, or listened to?
I love anything by Brené Brown. One of the best things I’ve listened to was her Ted Talk, “The Power of Vulnerability” in which she speaks to how we should allow ourselves to be vulnerable; by means of self-awareness, accepting criticisms and embracing our fears. She is a powerful, inspirational woman and I absolutely love listening to her speak.
If you could spend 24 hours with anyone, who would it be and what would you do?
If I could spend 24 hours with anyone, I would choose my nan. Though she is still alive, she is currently experiencing the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. I was young when the disease progressed, so I have never really had the chance to know her very well. I would love nothing more than to sit with her over a cup of tea and talk about her life (and maybe what she put in her “famous” meatballs).
Describe your personal style.
My personal style is very simple – there’s nothing I love more than a pair of jeans and a simple top. However, I like to accessorize! I have more pairs of shoes than I would like to admit, and I think that a cute pair of shoes can really tie together an outfit.
If you were given an unlimited amount of money to fix any one problem in the world, what issue would you choose and how would you help?
Being a social work student, this question is tough. There are many social issues that need to be “fixed”, however, at this moment I would use an unlimited amount of money to fix the mental health system in Nova Scotia. I would use the money to expand current mental health facilities and ensure that there are enough mental health professionals (physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers) on staff to work with those in need of help, so that ultimately no individual is denied assistance.
What are your favourite items currently in the shop?
Every item in the shop is beautiful which makes it hard to choose. However, my top favourites are the Ophelia jumpsuit, the Darling Dusty Rose dress and the Rifle Paper Company floral canteens!
What would you tell your 13 year old self about life thus far?
Wow, I could write a novel to my 13 year old self. My life hasn’t turned out the way I had envisioned it at 13, and that’s okay – it’s better than what I had planned back then. It’s important to use the challenges life throws at you as learning experiences, to help you grow and flourish as a person. I would tell her that it’s okay to be different from the crowd, and to simply be yourself. Embracing your uniqueness will help you discover who you truly are as an individual moving forward in life.
What is your personal motto or mantra?
My personal mantra is a nod to my educational background with regard to self-care - you can’t pour from an empty cup. This serves as a reminder to always keep your cup full and to take care of yourself first.

"I never expected it to turn into a little business, but I'm so happy it did."
You never know when you might be on the cusp of a new adventure. For Shelley MacIsaac, it all began one Christmas morning when she received a pair of earrings from her sister and that pivotal thought popped up into her head - "I could make this myself."
Shelley's a stay-at-home mom living in beautiful Margaree, Cape Breton, and is now the owner of her new handmade jewelry business, Something Handmade, crafting earrings out of genuine leather, suede, and natural wood. Her story is a gentle reminder to stay curious and open to opportunity (especially in the most unlikely of times and places), and to always work from a place of authenticity and heart.
Today she talks to us about the organic start to her business, how her minimalist lifestyle shapes how and what she creates, and what Jimmy Rankin has to do with it all. Enjoy! - Meghan
How did you get into making jewelry?
I’ve always had a creative streak, so I’ve tried many DIY projects. The first pair of earrings I made were the “kite earrings”, to give to my friends with my Christmas cards. I discovered that making them gave me a creative outlet I was craving. I loved working with wood to create something unique. That same Christmas my sister gifted me a pair of leather earrings. They were beautiful (but gold shimmer was a little too fancy for my taste) and naturally I said “I can make these”. So I picked up some leather in colours that were more my style and gave it a shot. Everyone seemed to want a pair of each, so I started selling some to help cover the cost. I never expected it to turn into a little business, but I’m so happy it did.
What does your creative process look like? What inspires you?
My creative process is pretty simple - I’m a minimalist at heart so my designs are usually based on simple, symmetrical lines. The walnut looks so natural (because it is) which is something I love, so I’m always eager to come up with new styles with it. And sometimes the process involves someone saying “you should make this style next” and if I’m feeling the idea I’ll give it a shot.
Where is your favourite place to work?
I make leather earrings at home while my kids are sleeping but my favourite place to work is in my Dad's woodworking shop. He helps me bring my ideas to life, and has taught me so much about wood and the processes needed to perfect the styles I envision.
What does your business mean to you?
I never intended on starting a business, but I have really enjoyed the process. It happened so organically, and is growing organically, which takes the pressure off and I love that.
The name Something Handmade actually came from a Jimmy Rankin song (it doesn’t get much more Cape Breton than that)! The lyrics are a plea for something authentic, something handmade. That principle resonates with me. Realness is a trend right now and I hope it sticks around. I’m a stay at home mom (which has always been my dream) and with that I’ve always wanted to be like the “proverbs 31 woman” which is basically a woman who is productive and who serves her family well. So having my own business means I can do something I really enjoy, and also make it work for my family’s needs. Plus I get to wear lots of cute earrings in the process!
Thanks for a behind-the-scenes peek, Shelley! Shop our selection of earrings in-store and online.

Here at LQ we're thrilled to be stocking Yellow Owl Workshop! Items chalk full of original graphics and bold colors, we're sure they will become one of your new favorites.
Being one of your new favorites we thought you'd like to get to know Yellow Owl Workshop. Read on you pretty little LQ and get to know them a little better:
Christine Schmidt's art career began in primary school when she won a bike at the local grocer's coloring contest. This bike was red and had ten whole speeds! After a youth spent on the plains of Kansas City and art school in Washington D.C., she and her loverboy, Evan, moved west to a little place perched atop windy Bernal Hill in San Francisco. Fueled by too much black tea and public radio shows, she spent nights creating hand-printed cards and gifts. Seeking out local suppliers and working with fine, momma-earth loving materials, she began honing her line of wares. In 2007, after steeling her nerves, Christine took a box of her goods to some local stores, they placed orders and Yellow Owl Workshop was born.
Current day Yellow Owl Workshop now bustles with a team of hard-working ladies in a sunny Mission district studio. Though Yellow Owl Workshop has grown and can be found in stores worldwide, the original values of expert attention to detail, ecological awareness and premium U.S. made materials are evident in every product. Legend says if you hold a stamp set really closely you can probably still smell the Earl Grey and hear a "Radio Lab" episode.
Notable for a sophisticated yet playful aesthetic, the products include rubber stamps and stamp ink pads, greeting cards and a line of exquisite gold pendants. Though the product line is diverse, consistent themes of innovative function, original graphics and bold colors emerge.
While Christine is handling the creative side of Yellow Owl, she is incredibly lucky to have amazing people handling the business of Yellow Owl. Her husband Evan Gross, longtime friend Maria Niubo, and a band of super ladies, keep the studio humming along.
Christine and Evan live in San Francisco with their new daughter, Emmy, who will begin entering coloring contests (and hopefully winning bikes!) after she masters solid foods and crawling.

]]>Meet Terri Buckland, the hands and heart behind The Little Red Door, and our new favorite polymer clay earrings!
Terri lives in a teeny, tiny but beautifully renovated cottage on Whynaught’s Cove, Nova Scotia! Her partner Christine and she moved there after making the decision that they wanted to live the simple life close to the ocean where they could look out the window and see the ocean tides and breathe the salty air!
They live on a huge property that happens to back onto hundreds of kilometers of wooded trails within the Peggy’s Cove loop. This is ideal for them because they have 6 rescue dogs who get to enjoy those glorious trails every day! Something many people don’t know is that her partner and she work with a local dog rescue to foster dogs in need.
They’ve adopted out lots of dogs to happy families, but have kept a few misfits along the way! Their dogs are all very small, and all but two are quite old. They each have unique stories that will break your heart and make you want to love them to pieces, which they do! Their dogs are super-duper happy now. They sort of think of themselves as a dog sanctuary… a soft place to land for dogs that most people wouldn’t want to adopt for one reason or another. They don’t have any children, so it’s just them and theirr precious fur-babies!
Let's get to know Terri and her process a little better!
How did you get into making earrings?
When we moved here, there was a shed on the property with a red door. It is a HUGE shed, it looks like more like a house! It had an old-fashioned wood-burning stove and cedar siding. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do something unique! It just called for a hobby. We moved here in order to be more ourselves, and for me that meant exploring my artistic side. I decided to use the shed as a studio. When I picked up a paint brush for the first time in 2015 it was an act of bravery. I had no idea if I could paint. My main goal was to explore an urge I had to get back to some fun. I started out painting furniture. I started to make a little name for myself in the furniture artist world, and I was featured multiple times by Unfolded, the company that manufactured my favorite paint by Annie Sloan, as well as by several other prominent furniture blogs. A dresser was my favorite canvas, and I’m so inspired by nature that I often painted botanicals on the furniture. Less than a year ago, we sold our big car and bought a tiny little one, and I couldn’t fit furniture in it anymore. Still wanting to be creative, that’s when I picked up clay for the first time in January 2018…less than 9 months ago!
What does your creative process look like?
I am extremely influenced by nature. My partner and I travel around the Maritimes, and I photograph it! I actually have a separate Instagram account dedicated to my photography. It’s so important for me to create from a place of love and authenticity. Two of my favorite quotes, which I also use as my creative mantra are: “Work is Love made visible.” -Kahlil Gibran and “Let what you love be what you do.” -Rumi
I create from a place I call “Flow” -from a God given place- which is sacred. I honor it by staying true to my own visions. What happens to me is, when I’m out in nature or meditating or dreaming, a spark of an idea, inspiration, or vision comes into my mind that represents a thing I love. For example, the first clay earring I ever made came to me after I walked the little picturesque village in Peggy’s Cove. I sat down and out popped this little abstract representation of it! Sometimes, I recreate a scene, sometimes it’s the color of a sunset, and other times it’s the way a rock looked in the sunlight. I adore it! I feel very, very happy when I’m making my little clay creations. My designs and creativity can not be forced. It flows in when it’s ready.
Where is your favorite place to work?
I recently designed an office space in my home. It is a total sanctuary. It has crispy white walls, with beautiful floor to ceiling shelves that hold my earring art. My own artwork covers the walls like a gallery. My essential oils and gemstones are also on display as well. I love this space.
What inspires you?
The Maritimes has so much beauty and I feel that we are so fortunate to call this place home. We have so much coastline, clean air, space, freedom and beauty! I never take it for granted. Since picking up a paintbrush in 2015 I’ve been inspired by botanicals, succulents and the scenery of our provinces. I call my creations after the thing that inspires it. I currently have four inspired collections: Beaches, Places, Nature and Nostalgia.
What does creating something with your own two hands mean to you?
Everything. I can’t even. This is the pinch me part! I couldn’t have dreamt in my wildest dreams that I had any talent at all, let alone having a successful business that is based on my own creativity. Creating something, for me, represents the belief in myself that I have something to offer. And that is everything, isn’t it? I think so. This business is love, made visible.
What has been your greatest challenge on this creative journey? What has been your greatest success?
The greatest challenges have led to my greatest successes! Anyone who creates anything knows about the feeling of vulnerability there is in putting yourself (your work) out there as an artist. As I step into this path of “being seen” it is constantly having to keep in check the reasons why I do this…which is for the love of it. Not for the money, or the popularity, or the approval, or the social media likes. Those are so tempting to follow though! The greatest challenge has been the willingness to make mistakes publicly and be judged…for me, that takes a lot of bravery! What if the earring falls apart? What if people don’t like them? What if I didn’t make enough and someone has to wait longer than I promised? What if I accidentally send it to the wrong address? Well, since I am a human, it’s very possible that I’m not going to be perfect. But, I always, always work with integrity and do my best! So, if I make a mistake it’s ok! And that’s been my greatest success: showing up for myself and being willing to try despite being scared! It’s a triumph. The personal growth has been huge.
When you look to the future, where do you see this creative endeavour taking you?
This is an uncommon practice as a business owner, but I don’t make goals. Well, that’s not true…I have one goal, which is to always follow my bliss! I think’s that’s the surest way to have success! I feel like life works out when you are being yourself, working with integrity and staying in alignment with what is true for you at the time.
The growth that The Little Red Door and Terri Buckland Creations has had is astonishing to me! I started out making these for myself, and I was initially giving them away for free. Then suddenly 20 people wanted earrings, and then 50. It has been a truly magical journey. Creating from a place of love, making the things I love and then getting to incorporate my artwork and photography and design skills to enhance my creations is an absolute dream come true! I have so much love for the people who seem to love my little creations as much as I do.
I do have some exciting ideas that are naturally evolving, and soon I’ll incorporate some new things into The Little Red Door offerings. We’ve got a major gift culture going on, where people are sending earrings and notes to their loved ones though me, and I have some exciting ideas around how I’m going to support this gift culture. I can’t wait to share as the vision and idea evolves!
I love that people think of their earrings as little pieces of home. I hope that my creations continue to create light in some small way in the hearts of others, as it does my own.

You read that right. Sangria. Ice. Pops. Combining two of our favorite things: cool Popsicle treats and cocktails. A "Poptail" if you will. I mean, you know what fans of sangria we are, so we're invested. All of our refreshing summer drinks seem to be cropping up in frozen treat form, which is definitely a trend we can get behind.
You're probably thinking, how did I not know about this? Don't worry, we've got you covered and the process and is simple. I know you're thinking, "is there some kind of trick?" But, really you simply take your favorite recipe and freeze it!
First, you will need a DIY Popsicle tray to get started then you throw together your favorite sangria recipe.
Now remember, the summer sun is hot, and we're trying to stay hydrated, so I like to pack in the fruit. It's a cool treat. It's boozy. It's a snack. It's the best of everything.
Something else you can do to sweeten the deal is add some simple syrup to your sangria mixture. This will make it more like a sweet treat.
Fill those trays up right to the brim and freeze. Maybe you'd like to freeze them over night, (Preferably before a pool party. I'm invited right?) this way you won't be stuck standing outside the freezer waiting for them to freeze instantaneously. It's slower to watch things freeze, then to watch the grass grow.
Finally, all you do is pop them out and enjoy! There's nothing as aesthetically pleasing as a Sangria Ice Pop in summer. Well, maybe a giant unicorn pool floatie, but I mean, why not do both?!
Invite the girls over, and pull these bad boys out of the freezer. Ta-da! You just became the most popular kid at the pool party.
We browsed around for some other delicious Poptails and made a list of the ones we can't wait to try this summer: Tequila Sunrise Pops, Mud Slide Ice Pops, Pina Colada Pops and Mojito Pops, to name a few. What are some Poptails you've made or would love to try?
